The last census published is 1901 therefore you need to try & get back to 1901 to start your research in earnest.

The Census was published in 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901.

Free information can be accessed on www.familysearch.org includes parish registers and contains millions of records compiled by the Church of Latter Day Saints (Mormon Church).

Births, deaths and marriages can be accessed free from www.freebmd.rootsweb.com  

You can order the certificates (£9.25 each) to gain more details on your ancestors from the The General Register Office (GRO) site www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates
